Course Code: ENG 102
Course Name: Advanced English II

Description:
This course is designed to help freshmen better cope with the English-language coursework in their major fields of study by concentrating on Reading, Critical Thinking, Vocabulary Development, Writing, Making an Oral Presentation and Using Internet Resources. The content is drawn from topics within the common-core knowledge classification schemes adopted by American, Australian, British, Canadian, and European universities. The course combines elements of both the Strategies Approach and the Task-Based Approach to language learning. The students are being trained to incorporate materials from several textual sources and to use academic text critically. (English Language and Literature and American Culture and Literature Department students cannot take this course for credit.)
Course Objectives:
This course will reinforce and expand the students' English competence and performance through textual and structural analysis, i.e., through learning how meaning is communicated by the organization of a text and learning how English syntax contributes to meaning. Coursework involves reading and analyzing various upper-intermediate and advanced level texts as well as listening activities relevant to the chosen topics. Students will also work on paraphrasing, restatement, and vocabulary development exercises, complete short, internet-based, writing assignments, and make a short presentation.

Grading Policy:
Blogger/Forum & Pamphlet 15% (Blogger/Forum: 10%, Pamphlet 5%)
Midterm 20%, Final Exam 40%, Oral Presentation 15%,
Attendance% Participation 10%

Blogger/Forum & Pamphlet: Students are to do the assignments and participate in discussions in Blogger/Forum. They will be asked to carry out tasks such as sentence analysis, vocabulary development exercises, and summary writing online. They will also be expected to express their ideas about the text studied that week and make evaluations of the other students comments on the subject discussed.
The students are also to write a pamphlet on “Mind-Body Connection” (Unit 3). The topic of the pamphlets will be decided by the teacher. The final deadline for the submission of pamphlets is beginning of the Week 9.

Online Journal: This task is for students who are interested in publishing the written forms and/or reports of their presentations. They can also include their findings, ideas, and comments on the topics studied/ discussed. Students will be rewarded extra credit points for the work.
Honor Code: All work done on the exams, in Blogger/Forum, and in the oral presentations will be done on your own and pledged. Sources must be properly credited. Students may discuss homework concepts and approaches; however, the work will be done by the individual.

Late Work and Examinations:
To obtain full credit, an assignment must be submitted on time. Late assignments and make-ups for missing exams will be accepted under special circumstances only, generally with prior arrangement.

Presentation: Students are expected to do a 10-minute-presentation at the end of the term. They will be granted the freedom to choose one of the topics below from Unit 4.
1- To present an interview conducted by the student.
2- Role play of a job interview (a pair work).
3- To give a lecture (advice) aimed at students after a good career.
